Expeditions
Dr. Anne A. MaddenDr. Anne A. Madden is an award-winning scientist, science communicator, and National Geographic Explorer. She pairs a depth of expertise in microbiology, ecology, and animal behavior with her contagious enthusiasm and childlike wonder.
❋ GeographiesDr. Madden draws on over two decades of field research, teaching student courses, and conducting expeditions in the neotropics, Moroccan Mountains, Yellowstone National Park, dry tropics of the Caribbean, and New England, USA.
❋ Topic Expertise Dr. Madden has undertaken behavioral studies of Costa Rica’s most deadly snake, collected paper wasps on motorcycle trips, sampled ancient marine sediments off the coast, and swabbed the hands of the world’s most famous sourdough bakers. Her research focuses on finding novel microbes in our environmental that can address planetary health challenges, but her research experience range from developing DNA technology used by NASA, to patanted brewing yeasts that changed how sour beer is made.
❋ CredentialsDr. Madden has a PhD from Tufts University in biology, with postdoctoral training at North Carolina State University and University of Colorado, Boulder. Beyond this academic background, she has won awards for her visionary research, received recognition for her global scientific advocacy and communication efforts, and been commended for her teaching and pedagogical practices. Her research is featured by major media outlets and has been the focus of past science documentaries.
